Forced out: But John Yates is still drawing a large salary from the Met
A Scotland Yard chief forced to quit over his handling of the phone-hacking scandal is still drawing his £185,000-a-year salary.

Assistant Commissioner John Yates, known as ‘Yates of the Yard’, announced his resignation on July 18, and four days later 500 colleagues bade him an emotional farewell as he left his desk.

Yet The Mail on Sunday has established that he is still on the Metropolitan Police payroll.

Mr Yates, 52, made his decision to quit more than two months before completing the 30 years’ service needed for his maximum pension. But by remaining an employee beyond August 31, he is now due the full £123,000 a year.

The Met insisted last night that Mr Yates had not been given special treatment, saying he had undertaken a ‘handover period’ and the force was still deciding his official retirement date.

In reply to a Freedom of Information request, the Met said that Mr Yates – who twice made the decision not to reopen the inquiry into telephone hacking – was ‘currently on leave’ and remained an Assistant Commissioner.

Yet on Friday, the Metropolitan Police Authority, which supervises the force, said there had been ‘no extension’ to his employment.
The former anti-terror chief has insisted he acted with integrity over the hacking affair, which also led to the resignation of Met Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson, whose replacement is expected to be announced this week.

In contrast to Mr Yates, Sir Paul announced his resignation on July 17 and retired 11 days later on July 28. But he had already exceeded his 30 years’ service, making him eligible for his maximum pension of £173,000 a year – two-thirds of his final £260,000 salary.

Mr Yates, a former Yard counter-terrorism chief, resigned after being told he would be suspended as his conduct was being referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

He is being investigated for allegedly helping the daughter of former News of the World executive Neil Wallis get a job at the Met. Mr Wallis had been employed by the force as a media consultant.

He has since been arrested as part of the phone-hacking inquiry.
